Too many women have been prescribed hormonal birth control without sufficient information about its potential side effects and long-term impacts on their brain development, mental health and life paths.

It’s time to demand transparency and accountability from governments, pharmaceutical companies and healthcare providers.

  • While hormonal birth control provides exceptional benefits for issues like acne or PMS, non-hormonal options (such as the copper-IUD) should be legally prioritized as the default prescription when no other medical indications exist, minimizing unnecessary side-effects and health risks.

  • Women under the legal age of 18 should not be prescribed hormonal contraceptives without extensive counseling and consideration of their unique developmental needs.

  • Despite the growing concerns and mounting suspicions, some medical professionals argue there is no conclusive proof for the concerns around hormonal birth control. Comprehensive research to settle this issue is long overdue.

  • A standardized leaflet providing clear and easy-to-understand comparison amongst contraceptive methods, detailing the hormonal contents, how they work, and all potential side effects should be included with every prescription or renewal. Helping women make informed choices that suit their health needs and lifestyle preferences.

  • Doctors should be required to conduct mental health assessments for patients on hormonal contraception every two years. This ensures that any potential negative impacts on mental well-being are addressed proactively.

  • In cases where females on hormonal contraception develop psychological issues, GP’s should first explore discontinuing it’s use and alternative methods before referring to psychotherapy. If the patient chooses to continue hormonal contraception, the psychotherapist should be fully informed of its use.
